A brand new city, Dongtan is being planned in China to house half a million people, the city will be located near Shanghai and will set new standards in sustainable urban planning. The city is to be designed to be environmentally sustainable, using as little energy as possible to try and be as carbon neutral as possible. The first phase of the city is to open in 3 years with much of the energy coming through renewable energy (wind power etc.). There are concerns from conservationists and farmers about the impact of the city on the valuable wetland environment close by and farmland in the area.
